Jackson Ranger District Seeks Public Comment on Land Exchange Proposal

by Jackson Hole. Media

The Bridger-Teton National Forest is seeking public comment on the proposed Bridge Creek Land Exchange in the Gros Ventre Mountains near Kelly, Wyoming. The Herbet H. Kohl Trust proposes to exchange approximately 80 acres of private land further up the Gros Ventre River, for approximately 45 acres of federal land near Red Hills Ranch. The proposal would result in a net gain of approximately 35 additional acres to the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Both parcels are within Teton County, Wyoming.

The proposed Bridge Creek Land Exchange project may help Bridger-Teton National Forest meet some long term resource management objectives of land ownership consolidation. Those objectives are: 1) secure dispersed, back country public recreation offering a high degree of solitude, 2) increase corridor acreage along the reach of the Gros Ventre River, a designated Wild & Scenic River (WSR), and 3) protect high quality secure habitat. The proposed exchange would also simplify management of lands within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and make wild fire management easier. A Memorandum of Agreement would be developed with the State Historic Preservation Office for the Wort/Gap Pucci cabin located on the federal parcel.

The project is subject to the pre-decisional administrative review process, also known as the objection process (36 CFR 218, Subpart A and B). While comments will be accepted any time during the planning process, to establish standing for objection eligibility, comments must be received during the designated opportunity to comment. Written, facsimile, hand-delivered, and electronic comments concerning this action will be accepted for 30 calendar days following the publication of the legal notice in the Casper-Star Tribune per the provisions of 36 CFR 218.
