Post and Pole Permits Available For Moran Cut Area

by Jackson Hole. Media

The Blackrock Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest is issuing a limited number of post and pole permits for a 10-acre unit on the Fourmile Road area just north of the Blackrock Ranger Station off of Highway 26/287 on Rosie’s Ridge. The cutting unit is identified with post and ribbon visible form the access roads.

Primary access is via Forest Service Road 30060 (Rosie’s Ridge), which opened on July 1, 2018. Visitors to the sale area do not need to go thru a gate. To access the area, turn down to the left just before you get to the seasonal closer gate below the gravel pit. Follow the existing two -rack road thru the grass and around the pond. The two-track is marked with pink flags which leads into the Post and Pole area. Users must cut their way into the stand. The old road is jackstrawed or obstructed with dead trees and overgrown from years of non-use. Forest Service Road 30050 (4 Mile Road) is open and passable and the sale area can be accessed from this road as well. The 30050 road takes visitors to the right turn coming from Highway26/287 to 30060 road for access, up just past gate into gravel pit area.

“The Forest Service offers the trees for thinning to improve forest health,” said Mark Keil, Forester for the Blackrock Ranger District. “Our hope is to offer the wood very affordably to the general public so it can be used productively. Possible uses may be for post or pole fences, firewood, chipped for landscaping, or other uses.

Minimum sales for the permits will be $20 and 100 trees maximum, per household, per year. The trees available range between 3 and 7 inches in diameter at breast height (dbh). Trees above 7dbh have been painted with orange paint and are not available for harvest.

Permit holders are asked to pile limbs and tops removed from the trees before leaving the area. The cutting area is open now until November 1, 2018 and will be open next season if any material remains available.

Approximate amount of firewood, posts and poles included in 1 ccf (cubic feet of wood) are:

  • One solid cord of firewood
